Whooaaa what the hell!

Okay so you know cilantro, right? Cilantro is this herb which has the unique property of tasting like food to some people and like metal and soap to others. It has been suggested that this is due to a compound in it which only some individuals have the ability to taste, and experimentally determined (Heather Noxon and Alex Meyer, 2004, Genetic Analysis of PTC and Cilantro Taste Preferences) that a distaste for it is apparently directly inheritable.

I have always found dried cilantro to have a pretty objectionable taste, but not to the point where it was a total dealbreaker if something had dried cilantro in it. Today, though, I had fresh cilantro for the first time, and HOLY SHIT. It tasted like a dead penny took a shit in my mouth! It was just this horrible acrid metallic taste, and it was seriously physically painful. I still feel like I ate the Statue of Liberty or something. I kind of got the chewing-on-foil sensation in my teeth, too. Goddamn nasty.

Okay, so. Here we go.

“It’s like the moon is crashing into the Earth," complained Rob Carney, a 25-year-old data analyst in Boston, “and there’s fire and everything is burning, and everything is wrong.”
