Here is a brief list of things which I would like to be rid of

  • "Gamer" as a social archetype — If I ask you to describe yourself, and you say the word "gamer" at all, I will end your piteous existence right then and there.
  • Console wars — NOBODY WORTHWHILE CARES ABOUT HOW MANY MEGATEXELS ARE IN THE NINTENDO XP HOME EDITION VERSION OF "KEATON THE BIKE'S CRAZY NONSENSE WORLD"
  • The romantic concept that "gaming" is a physically demanding activity — I don't think I need to explain why I want to punch whoever came up with "Mountain Dew Game Fuel" and the various other Precision Extreme Action Product accoutrements which are sold on the theory that playing video games is actually an action-filled and peril-fraught activity on par with participating in infantry skirmishes. If video games are not fulfilling your need to feel Active and Skilled, you do not need to invent special video game seat cushions. You need to go play outside. I can't follow the sort of juvenile mindset which leads people to operate like this. I thought this was stupid when I was six years old.
  • Video games mostly

The difference is that tgies dislikes video games because he thinks they're bad for you, and you dislike video games because you suck at them even though they comprise most of your life.

Okay, then you're agreeing with tgies for the sake of agreeing with tgies while simultaneously doing the thing while you type like him.

also I just plain agree because if you actually read his post, he doesn't actually really make any serious points about games themselves, just the culture around them

I must admit I'm guilty of some of these behaviours to a small extent. But I have the feeling that their level of obnoxiousness is a function of how seriously one takes the hobby. And I really don't.

Although I am dissapointed I couldn't get fucking Freespace 2 to run on this computer. That game was fun. (This sort of shit does remind me why I switched to consoles, though. Embedded systems rock my socks)

Yeah I really don't care if people play video games I mean I bust some of that out myself every so often (though very rarely)

It's when people get to the point that even they feel that their entire existence is best defined by the fact that they piss away too much time noodling about on World of Warcraft that I start to go okay wait a second no more video games for you.

I agree for the most part except I'm pretty sure that "Game Fuel" drink business is more about reaction time and similar concepts than about the typical demands of rigorous physical activities.

Well sure that's a good point but I really don't care anyway

- You don't need performance-enhancing drugs to play video games stop taking this so seriously
- "Game Fuel" just Sounds Retarded

And yeah, I would say that "gamer" is just about as stupid an archetype as "guy who watches movies" or "guy who reads comic books" or any other singular habit or hobby. It's pretty silly to do that!

Yes, and it's somehow made more annoying by the fact that we have to have a special word for it and that the whole social niche these people have carved out for themselves is pretty grossly detached from reality and now we have to have GAMER PRIDE and all this nonsense and augh stop defining yourselves in terms of the fact that you probably spend more time goofing off than you ought to

I guess I'm just generally really really irritated by anything related to fixating on any one particular thing, especially when it isn't really a constructive pastime or something

I mean all manner of People Who Like Some Form Of Entertainment A Lot drive me absolutely up the wall and I think it's partly because I just cannot get my head around how anyone could be content to spend all their time on one thing like that

That and I got pretty sick a long time ago of nerds who feel that they've got the world all figured out and SOCIETY IS WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING and they don't need to try to be decent people because of this. I never thought I'd say this but I think you need to go like get a girlfriend or something because damn

Did you just describe leandros?

Also you forgot the term "E-athletes" and similar ones which are so amazingly sad they make me explode.

I think eri tried to defend the term onces in IRC ages and ages back. Oh dear.

I don't really follow developments in the field of Leandros as much as you guys seem to I don't know I never really found him that objectionable but maybe I just don't pay enough attention

And yeah no that's terrible

who's "eri"? that seems more like something CAFM would do

Sorry, I meant Erik. The Irish one.

Leandros isn't objectionable really but he doesn't go outside too much and can be a bit sociopathic at times.
