My parents were watching American Idol tryouts and then so was I and I noticed that they always use a certain compressor on the performances of people whom they allow to enter the competition.

The action of this compressor, which seems to operate mostly on the midrange, is very audible, and allowed me to correctly predict the fates of every contestant within three seconds. Sometimes one could even hear a change in the characteristics of the sound of the ambient noise or anyone who happened to be talking as it came on over audio when there was no opportune silence.

Boy, that's a surprisingly early point to start using technical trickery to enhance the contestants.

Oh well, I guess they do inevitably become meat for the Max Martin grinder anyway.
