My dad is absolutely convinced that Obama has no plan to fund anything and that it's all going to come out of the pocket of the middle class and that's why he still supports Ron Paul

What do you say to that kind of thing

also my mom hates clinton because my mom is a misogynist, which is really pretty weird (the baptist church makes misogynists of women)

Ron Paul dropped out, and is a white supremacist. That's what *I'd* say. Also, has your dad ever heard of rich people? They have money.

Lots of women are misogynists. Worse than men, even, really, because all it takes for sexism to maintain itself is for women to hate themselves and each other -- men don't actually have to do much active hating (not that some don't), they just have to smile and say "yes, dear." The Baptist Church doesn't even have to get involved -- self-hatred starts happening the first time you get called "she".

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you saying that misogyny is so pervasive in our society that it hardly matters what an individual group has to say about it, or something else entirely?

I'm saying that our society (although I hate to put it that way, I can't think of a better word right now) inculcates self-hatred into women so thoroughly that women get to be self-hating long before they have a chance to be influenced by any specific church or group. It's kind of built into the English language.

Is this the pronoun thing?

I'd like it if someone did something about that, but so far all the suggestions I've seen for new pronouns are pretty clunky and awful.

Yes there is, they're all collective. Every time I try using those pronouns, I get grammarians take me to task about using a collective pronoun to refer to an undividual.

Unfortunately, I know way too many pedantism fascists when it comes to grammar.

Then you can tell those grammarians to go to hell because they think they know better than Shakespeare. Are grammarians really so intimidating that you'll avoid using good English for fear of their scorn?

It's every time the English language encourages you to refer to someone's genitals when describing things about them that have not much to do with their genitals.

If singular "they" was good enough for Austen and Shakespeare (two people who were much better writers than I am), it's good enough for me.

lol singular "they"

I love how objection to singular "they" just sprung up out of nowhere a relatively short time ago, and people started calling it a neologism and stuff and ARGH IT'S INCORRECT ENGLISH and it SOUNDS AWKWARD

I learned singular "they" before fucking preschool and it never seemed remotely awkward or ambiguous to me, but to each their (lol) own, i guess

my favorite kind of prescriptivism is the kind where people get angry about established conventions because they SOUND AWKWARD

english sounds awkward, bub

Indeed. Have I linked to "A Person Paper on Purity in Language" (http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~evans/cs655/readings/purity.html) enough times this decade?

I love that one because it pisses off everyone to whom I show it and they are like "WELL THAT'S DIFFERENT" and I am like "oh really how so" and they are like "FUCK YOU OKAY" and I am like "lmao free ur mind neo"

I still remember when my undergrad advisor introduced a lecture on higher-order functions with "I'm going to tell you something that will change your entire worldview." And it did!

That was amusing, although about halfway through I'm like "OK, I get the joke, do you have any others?...No? Fuck this, I'm too drunk to read the rest".

Check out the Delany essay I recommended in another comment on this post, then -- it says some of the same things, but not in satirical form, and it's less explicitly funny but far more brain-tickling.

Read Samuel Delany's essay "Shadows" in his book _Longer Views_. (You can get it on Google Print (http://books.google.com/books?id=TUU2u-Ez3ucC&pg=PR39&dq=shadows+samuel+delany&ei=D53QR9n_K5y-swPB8cykBQ&sig=DTv0rVYNIh2e9BW1YYMnLz6NwlQ#PPA254,M1) -- go to p. 254 -- but if you don't want missing pages, you'll just have to go to a library or something.)

I mean, you don't have to read it, but there's no point in me talking with you about this until you do, because otherwise we'd just be reinventing the wheel.

He probably believes the economic neoconservative rhetoric about the middle class paying the burden of everything. At the same time as "the top 5% of people pay 95% of taxes" or whatever.

Ron Paul...is a white supremacist.

If even half of what I've heard about Tony's dad is true, I'd suspect telling him that wouldn't have the desired effect.

I'd hardly say that "No plan to fund anything" is specific to Obama. Politicans on both sides these days seem to be rather fond of public spending on credit (especially Republicans, which is quite dissappointing considering that once upon a time they were fans of fiscal conservatism).

In the end 95% of voters are going to go on impressions and not be able to back up a thing they say anyway.

You should have to pass a certain level on an IQ test and then a "i'm not a vapid dick" test to be able to vote.

everyone gets all serious about the issues and does their research and then goes to the polling place on voting day and votes for the candidate who is, in their opinion, taller

You should have to pass a certain level on an IQ test and then a "i'm not a vapid dick" test to be able to vote.

I can see no way this idea could possibly go wrong

I clearly qualify as a dick, so I'm curious as to what the definition of "vapid" is, for these purposes.

yeah, unfortunately, it's not just the Baptist church that makes misogynists out of women. A friend of mine whose mother is generally nonreligious and actually pretty liberal has said something along the lines of, "Hillary should not be elected because it's not right for a woman to be president." where the fuck does that even come from??

granted, I'm voting for Barack, not Hillary.... but it has nothing to do with gender.

the indoctrination of a massive institutionalized system of discrimination and oppression COMMON SENSE girls is hella dumb. she might get one of them "emotions" the womens is always having or like ban trucks because she's feelin' menstrual

I have heard far more sexist remarks than racist ones this election, which surprised me at first, but then I remembered that sexism is still 95% socially acceptable. I love this planet

I think people aren't actually any less racist than they are sexist, but somehow it's more okay to be openly sexist than to be openly racist. I guess because jokes about how men and women are different are still considered "funny" and jokes about how blacks and whites are different aren't -- but maybe I have cause and effect backwards.

That's what I said, yeah.

I think GIRLS IS DUBM is still acceptable because the particular social idea it's based on has a longer history and the fucking western idea of what a family is is goddamn built on the idea that girls is dubm and it's harder to point out some big giant example of sexism being horrible and killing everyone like it is with the enslavement of black ppl or what have you

Yeah, pretty much. Racism is scary things like lynching and slavery; sexism is happy fun things like keeping women barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen. (Not scary things like clitoridectomies (and I mean the kind that were done in nineteenth-century America and that continue now on intersex children, not the kind those weird foreigners do, y'know) and unlicensed abortion, of course.)

Date: 2008-03-07 12:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tgies.livejournal.com
those don't count because intersex people aren't people and the female orgasm is probably a myth and you shouldn't be getting an abortion in the first place
