A waveshaper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waveshaper) maps each possible amplitude value to a different one. That Wikipedia article depicts the FL Studio included waveshaper plugin. Here's (http://static.kvraudio.com/i/b/cyanide.jpg) another one, showing a "soft clipping" curve and a visual aid in the form of a sine wave before and after passing through the filter.
A slightly jagged/irregular/discontinuous waveshaping function achieves a sort of fuzz effect, as heard here. The sharp jumps in the function produce sharp jumps in the output where the amplitude crosses them, thus introducing new higher harmonics into the signal.
