I always found it kind of funny that people who think that rap music makes minorities commit more crimes by "glorifying" those crimes are never prepared to believe that country music makes rural white people more apt to get drunk and get in domestic squabbles and crash their pickup trucks into stuff.

gangsta rap and other crime-centric aspects of hip-hop music make a lot more sense when one realizes that hip-hop and rap were originally folk musics (in the classic sense, not the "Simon and Garfunkel" sense)

Once one has that perspective, the comparisons to Cocalero music, outlaw country, Russian crime-themed folk music http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanson etc. become quite natural and obvious.

Yeah, I remember bringing up blatnaja pesnja and the popularity of the Fun Likable Thief in early English folk music in some horrible Internet argument about the evil gangster music a while back. A lot of people are pretty determined to point out that it glorifies materialism and whatever the hell else while remaining completely blind to the same exact shit in every kind of music ever. Oh shit, turns out entertainment is escapism. Who knew. Fuck, guys.

I'm also pretty tired of people somehow not understanding that popular entertainment is a product of culture and not the other way around.

The use of the "j" in that phrase is interesting.

Are you using a different transliteration from the one I use, or is that the same word in some slavic language which uses the latin alphabet (such as Polish or Czech)?

Oh, I use International Scholarly System/United Nations transliteration, because it's the first one I was introduced to and seems to be pretty widely used. I hadn't even noticed Wikipedia was using a different one. It seems like Wikipedia articles usually use ISS, so that's kind of surprising. Maybe they haven't standardized.

You work all day for some old man
Sweat and break your back
Then you go home to your castle
But your queen won't cut you slack

That's why you're losin' all your hair
That's why you're overweight
That's why you flipped your pickup truck
Right off the interstate

There's a lot of bull they hand you
There's nothing you can do
Your wife don't understand you, but I do
No your wife don't understand you, but I do
I said no one understands you but I do~~~

I think these people don't believe that "country music makes rural white people more apt to get drunk and get in domestic squabbles and crash their pickup trucks into stuff" because you live in the South and everything is backwards there.

Anyway, yeah, I wanted to come in and make the point that music (and entertainment) stems from culture and not vice versa, but you already made it, so I'll instead make the point that if you're going to talk about hiphop, gangsta rap is trash anyway and I'm fine with people hating on it :R

I wouldn't really consider Nebraska "the south", but maybe that's just me.

And yeah, from my subjective standpoint, a whole lot of hip-hop is shitty, but then about as much of any other genre of music is shitty, too.

No, you're getting it all wrong. People are concerned that rap music will make white people commit such crimes; it has no effect on black people because they are all violent criminals anyway. See, white people don't want their type to be committing minority-like crimes; they want them to stick to good Christian patriotic white crimes like getting drunk and crashing their pickup trucks into things.

I thought rural white people were more apt to get drunk and get in domestic squabbles and crash their pickup trucks into stuff. And listening to songs about that all the time portraying such behaviour as the normal way to react to stressful situations probably would cause it to happen more often.
