  1. Why do old electrolytic capacitors often smell exactly like fish oil? Do they use fish oil in the dielectric or something? I have been told by at least one experienced engineer that this is the case.
  2. If so, does that mean vegans have to stop buying electronics?

I'm not so sure that's a good idea. I suspect something similar is how ROHS got started.

Next thing you know, there'll be a new bunch of regulations to make capacitors vegan friendly that'll have them costing twice as much and blowing up with a frequency that makes the capacitor plague look like a golden era of reliability.
