ISO-2022-JP-* and the like, where there are escape characters >127 for switching to and fro between ASCII and various two-byte Japanese encodings?

Not that I'm saying that, in this fast-paced day and age of dog-eat-dog worlds featuring Unicode, it is at all excusable. Just possible.

yeah that's what we wind up using but the system isn't aware of it and can't display it itself
